Post Sabbatical Reflection

There was more planned for my 2019 sabbatical beyond the Festival Gathering, but when I announced my departure from Nazareth and St. John's Lutheran Churches to accept a call from Calvary Lutheran in Chillicothe, the two churches rescinded the continuing education time and funds I had accumulated.

If you read the previous entries carefully, you may have noticed that I wrote that I looked forward to the 2020 Festival Gathering.  That didn't happen either, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, a lot of good things came from my short 2019 sabbatical.  I continued with much of what I had planned with my new congregation.  A number of aspects of the sabbatical became the foundation for the first year of "Vacation Bible University" at Calvary Lutheran.  In 2024, VBU included a multi-session wine-making class, a class on the oils of sacred scripture, a fitness component, and a biblical storytelling workshop with Amelia Boomershine, mentioned in the previous blog.

And in 2025, I incorporated some of Mrs. Boomershine's workshop techniques into my own (as seen above) as part of our annual Calvary Retreat.  I would say the retreat was one of the better events I have created and led in my 30 years of ministry.
